Fall Greek Wine Festival

Did you miss this year's Greek Wine Festival? See what happened here! You won't want to miss it again. Thankfully, we have two festivals a year now to appease your appetite for great gyros, baklava and more.

Loukoumades, gyros, ouzo. OPA!

Do the words baklava, paximadia or loukoumades make your mouth water? Can you taste the buttery honey soaked goodies by just thinking of them? How about that little gooey bit of sweet syrup that lingers on your fingers just after picking up one of these delicious goodies? Close your eyes, come on. Think of licking that little bit off your fingers and savor the memory from this past spring's GreekFest, located at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church on Race Street in downtown Charleston. There's good news to be shared, folks! The 2nd Annual Greek Fall Festival is happening again this year from October 4-6th!

The gyro tent will be rocking out with 10 registers open and serving the best gyros in town. A lamb/beef blend, served on a warm pita straight from the grill, topped with onions, tomatoes and the freshest tzatziki sauce in Charleston can be paired with seasoned Greek fries or a homemade Greek potato mixture. Greek potatoes are grilled with onions and peppers then tossed into some special flavorings that you will only find at either of the Church's festivals during the year. Tender chicken or shrimp gyros are also available, and you can always try a pork souvlaki skewer on the side. Hamburgers, hot dogs and chicken fingers will also be available for those more interested in traditional American fare.

Spend your day listening to some of the best Greek music on the East Coast. Nick Trevalis, along with George Antonopoulis and Joanna, will have you dancing with the Greek Dancers. Trevalis spins his mandolin skills into a fun and energizing set, and you can watch the young dancers perform their well practiced routines in traditional Greek dress. The folks at the Gyro tent are always having a good time and can often be heard clapping, yelling and singing along with the musicians and in support of the kids. (Ouzo might have something to do with that, but then again - it could be the Greek wine or beer that serves to keep us hydrated in the long hot days.)

Speaking of Greek wine, did you know they do wine tastings? Stop by the tasting tent and try each of the Greek wines and learn how to pair them with your favorite meals. Try the Agiorgitiko, a nice red with black cherry undertones. Or perhaps, taste a Xinomavro, another red with firm tannins and a fruity punch. An Athiri or Assyrtico, iighter white wines, will refreshen your palate before heading back to decide which of your favorite desserts you'd like to take home.

Kick It At Bohicket - Bohicket Marina, Seabrook Island

Attending Kick It at Bohicket on Wednesdays throughout the summer is perhaps one of the best things you can do for yourself and your family. Siding up next to Seabrook Island, Bohicket Marina is the perfect place to host this family friendly affair. The event offers a variety of fun activities for kids to enjoy while parents can indulge in a cocktail while watching the sun set behind the beautiful yachts parked in the marina’s slips.

As we arrived with the kids, we first noticed Mr. Frazer from Frazer’s Bait and Tackle gathering guesses from children up to 14 years old for a chance to win a free pass to the teen fishing tournament the next morning. Kids attempted to figure out how many fishing weights were in a mason jar. The number was between 1 and 500, and the person with the winning guess this week got it right at 156!

A DJ booth was set up with a “dance floor” nearby, and children and adults of all ages shagged their way through popular beach songs. Line dancing, including the Electric Slide, was a huge hit for ladies. Approximately 400 people lounged in the expansive dock area watching dancers boogie while sipping on refreshments from the Frazer Bar and Grill or Reds IceHouse. For those of you who have not yet seen the marina, there are tables spread throughout the deck, and there is a beautiful round shallow pool that reflects the sunlight in a gorgeous array of sparkling glitter.

Laughing and singing along with the DJ’s hits, parents could be seen twirling their children around and dancing with little ones clinging to their parents’ necks with glee. A little girl entertained us with her version of the “shag”, a dance made popular in South Carolina and showcased by Phoebe Cates in a locally filmed movie, Shag. Children also enjoyed beautiful face paintings by one of the best artists in town. The artistry on each child’s face was as individual and original as a young Monet’s might have been.
While we sipped on our cocktails, our kids ventured out and acquired balloon animals, which were created by a talented local balloon artist. Dolphins, spiders, and other cool creatures were making their way through the crowds with giggling boys and girls proudly waving them in delight. A bounce house was located just off to the right, and you could hear the screams of happy children drifting through the air.

As the sun went down, the beautiful sky reflected the reds, blues and purples off the ocean that are so well known at Seabrook Island. Bohicket’s Marina is a gorgeous spot to sit and simply enjoy a cool breeze while watching the sun set off the Atlantic Coast. The weekly Kick It At Bohicket should be on your list of summer activities for your family, as the free event is simply exquisite in both beauty and fun entertainment. Stroll along alone and enjoy the docks as well. The view is incredible!
